Often when I’m asked about planning a home makeover, the attention generally turns to materials and finishes before anything else.
Before deciding on doing a makeover, there are several critical factors to decide on before getting to the really fun part, like colour and materials.
The biggest decision is usually deciding on a home renovation or a home makeover.
Home renovations usually mean pulling up floors, sometimes moving walls, upgrading kitchens, new bathrooms etc.
While a home makeover is often a more simple procedure, involving new colours, new carpets, lighting, furniture, accessories and so on.
Planning either of these projects will involve:
- how to get the most out of your existing space
- budget
- estimated time
- if necessary moving out while the work is being done (usually renovation more than makeover)
- colours and finishes (materials)
- furniture layouts to work most efficiently in the new space
Home makeovers and renovations can be a great experience, but how much of a great experience really depends upon great planning!
Happy planning!
